Of course, we can’t talk about Ken without acknowledging the titular Barbie (Margot Robbie), the multi-career icon who enters the real world in the film. We’ve already seen how endearing the two of them are together on screen, and it seems like that energy was captured offscreen as well. Thank God for that! According to Ryan Gosling, the input from Robbie and Greta Gerwig, who also co-wrote the film with Noah Baumbach, was the motivation she needed to truly embrace her stowaway status.
“I was living my life, so one day I was bleaching my hair, shaving my legs, and wearing neon tailored suits and rollerblading down Venice Beach,” Gosling explained. “It started as a fever, really.”
As my dear colleague BJ once predicted, he really has been grossed out. And that fever that Gosling said he caught after hugging his Kenergy? Well, he has already taken the internet by storm. Ever since the first full-length trailer for “Barbie” dropped, Gosling has been touted as the film’s potentially unexpected MVP, and even his brief appearances capture the absurdity of a doll pretending to be human. Do you remember that line of “Because we are girlfriend and boyfriend?” I sure do, and dear reader, I won’t soon forget it.
What Kenergy actually entails remains to be seen, but that’s okay. We’ll all find out when “Barbie” hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
