Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr have been fined unspecified amounts for the ugly exchange they shared before their middleweight fight earlier this year.
Smith made astute references to questioning his rival’s sexuality at the final pre-fight press conference in January, while Eubank Jr responded with criticism of the Liverpudlian’s social class and marriage.
The British Boxing Board of Control found the pair guilty of misconduct and issued fines to be paid within 28 days.
A statement read: “Delegates to the British Boxing Board of Control considered the comments made by Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr at the press conference on January 19, 2023 at their meeting on Wednesday April 12, 2023.
“Mr. Smith did not appear nor was he legally represented. Mr. Eubank Jr did not appear but was legally represented.
“After a full consideration of all the facts presented before the stewards, the stewards found that the charge of misconduct was proven for both boxers.
“Mr. Smith and Mr. Eubank Jr were fined, payment to be made within 28 days.”
Sky Sports apologized for the “personal and homophobic comments”, while both fighters also expressed regret immediately after a fiery encounter with the press concluded.
Eubank Jr, who deliberately wore a pro-LGBTQ+ bracelet at the weigh-in, was knocked down twice as Smith secured a fourth-round knockout victory in the bout at Manchester Arena.
Last month, Eubank Jr revealed that he had invoked his rematch clause.
