Eilish McColgan is doubtful to make her London Marathon debut on Sunday due to a knee problem.
Event organizers confirmed Thursday night that McColgan delayed his trip to London to give him the best chance to compete, so he would not attend a pre-event press conference scheduled for Friday morning.
The 32-year-old Scotsman, who won her first major track title at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will see how the injury responds before making a final decision. The organizers confirmed that an update was expected by 2 pm on Friday.
“Frustratingly, in the last few days, I’ve noticed a problem with my knee,” said McColgan, whose mother, Liz, won the London marathon in 1996.
“I am waiting to see how he responds to treatment and want to give him as much time as possible before making a final decision on whether to run in the TCS London Marathon on Sunday.”
McColgan had planned to run the 2022 London Marathon last October before being forced to withdraw due to a medical issue.
The problem was identified as rebound hypoglycemia, a common occurrence among endurance athletes that leads to reduced blood sugar levels as there is not enough glucose in the blood to meet the body’s needs.
