At least one person was killed, four others were injured and one suspect remains at large after a mass shooting in downtown Atlanta, according to police.
The Atlanta Police Department reported an “active shooter situation” shortly after noon near Northside Hospital Medical Midtown.
Police identified a suspect as 24-year-old Deion Patterson, who is “believed to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached,” according to police.
Four victims were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where three people are in critical condition and another person is in surgery. One person was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, police said.
Atlanta Police Department Chief Darin Schierbaum told reporters that the five women had been shot in a waiting room on the 11th floor of the building. Chief Schierbaum said the woman who died was 39 years old, while the other four injured women were 25, 39, 56 and 71 years old.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said his office remains in close contact with police and continues to advise people to shelter in place.
There have been at least 189 mass shootings in the US in the first five months of 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Technology played a “very important role” in the arrest of the shooting suspect
Advanced surveillance technology played a “huge role” in the capture of the gunman wanted for shooting five people at an Atlanta hospital on Wednesday.
Authorities said a key break in the case came when investigators saw a license plate number on a vehicle the attacker allegedly stole.
“Those tools are what really gave us the clues we needed to make this a success,” Cobb County Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer said during a news conference Wednesday.
The police official said officers checked several locations, including a construction site, while accumulating information on the suspect, believed to be Deion Patterson.
Eventually, VanHoozer said, an undercover officer confronted the suspect and officers were able to take him into custody without incident.

As shootings continue, US states further loosen gun laws
Many US states continue to weaken their gun laws, even as mass shootings continue.
As we reported in March, in the weeks before six people, including three 9-year-old boys, were fatally shot inside a Nashville school, Tennessee lawmakers considered various laws to ease restrictions on firearms.
The proposals came two years after Republican Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill making it easier for people to openly carry firearms in the state without a permit. Tennessee is one of 25 states with a concealed carry without permit law, a move US lawmakers have been quick to adopt as part of what right-wing activists have called a “constitutional carry” movement in recognition of the Second Amendment.
The same year the Tennessee legislation was signed into law, lawmakers passed similar measures in Arizona, Iowa, Montana, Texas and Utah. In 2022, lawmakers passed similar bills in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is expected to enact a similar measure this year after it passed in a GOP-controlled legislature.

The suspect, who used to serve in the US Coast Guard, is still on the loose and a mass manhunt is underway after police warned the 24-year-old is “considered armed and dangerous.” “Don’t go near him,” tweeted the Atlanta Police Department how they identified it
