The former world number one beat Tommy Paul in the final of an ATP Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence on Sunday after taking a late wild card into the tournament to continue his preparations for the French Open, which begins on the 28th. of May.
The Scotsman will hope to build on that success in Rome this week on the site of his latest top-tier clay court crown.
But he faces tough opposition in the first round in the form of the veteran Fognini, always a danger on this surface.
