An Illustrated Tribute to New York City’s Independent Shops, In Pictures

During the pandemic, New York-based illustrator Joel Holland began drawing all the places he normally visited with his two daughters — butcher shops, bookstores, sandwich stands — to comfort himself and celebrate local independent businesses. “These places are the soul of where we live,” he says. Since then he has drawn nearly 500 stores in Manhattan, collected in the book New York storefronts (Published by Prestel; Brooklyn and London editions forthcoming).
